The government has announced that public primary and secondary schools will reopen on Monday, just hours after the court quashed the teachers’ strike and ordered them to resume duty immediately.
In a statement released this evening, the Ministry of Education says in line with the Education Act 2013 section 95(3), all schools resume on Monday 28th September 2015 for Standard 1-7 and forms 1-3. The third term will now run from September 28th to November 20th.
“Considering that during the period of the pay dispute there was little learning in some schools while others did the full load as planned it is directed that schools that were fully on continue for the remaining portion of the term,” said Principal Secretary for Education Belio Kipsang. “Schools that bore the full effect of the dispute will extend the term by one week and forego the half term break.”
He said the remaining time will be recovered in the subsequent terms of school calendar for 2016, which will be released in due course. He warned school heads against levying extra fees on parents in the pretex of covering costs occasioned by the strike and pay dispute.
Judge Nelson Abuodha, ruling on the case this afternoon, asked the government and the teachers unions to form a conciliatory committee and resolve the pay dispute that had paralysed learning in public schools. “Teachers should suspend the strike and resume work immediately,” he ordered.
