Five powerful lessons we can all learn from Janet Kanini

[dropcap]J[/dropcap]anet Kanini was not just a powerful TV personality. Her battle with cancer brough out her other strengths and with her death, we look at some of the lessons we can learn from her life and times as compiled by Thomas Rajula of Daily Nation.

1. A problem shared is halved

Through social media, Janet was able to let us all into her suffering from the start of her journey. Her First post about her first trip to India for surgery to treat the illness wasn’t message of hopelessness or doom.

She talked about her experience would educate and comfort others. Janet emphasised on the importance of having loved ones around during the hard times, and letting people into your times of doubt.

2. You’re only as strong as you believe you are

She never even once doubted she wouldn’t beat the cancer, that was already at stage 4. Always positive, even about the strength-sapping effects of the treatment there after.

3. The power of friendships and networks

The country rallied around Janet because she had put herself out there to talk about the effects of cancer to give hope to others. The whole country came to aid her in a show of solidarity to give her morale and financial support, led by her former colleagues and the Nation Media Group fraternity.

4. Make lemonades with life’s lemons

Janet embraced her look after chemo and maintained her short hair do. She went on to take every opportunity to talk about her battle and victory over lung cancer.

5. A smile can heal the world

Janet always wore a brilliant smile in public to encourage others. She didn’t want pity, her only mission was to be a beacon of hope and an advocate for courage under fire.
