BAT Kenya dominates 89.7% of the Sh3.9 billion NSE turnover

Boosted by the sale of British American Tobacco (BAT Kenya) shares, turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) soared to Ksh3.9 billion.

Of the total turnover, BAT Kenya transacted shares worth Ksh3.5 billion, meaning it accounted for 89.7% of the day’s traded value.

The activity by the cigarette manufacturer was enough to see NSE turnover jump from the previous session’s Ksh325M.

Stocks at the trading floor also increased, with the bourse closing at 20 million shares as against the 11 million posted on Tuesday.

BAT Kenya’s activity was enough to even relegate perennial top bourse dominators Safaricom to register a meagre 3.67% of the day’s traded value.

The giant telco closed the day 10cents higher at Ksh26.50.

At the indices, all counters were blinking green as the day’s trading attracted positive gains.

  • The NSE 20 share Index was up 2.35 points to stand at 2909.74.
  • All Share Index NASI edged up 0.90 points to stand at 154.60.
  • The NSE 25 Share index added 45.67 points to stand at 3872.69.

NSE Sectors Wrap

With BAT Kenya’s trading, the Manufacturing and Allied sector was busiest with shares worth Ksh3.6 billion traded.

The 92.87% share of the day’s traded value also included E.A Breweries closing the day 3.96% higher to Ksh203.50. It moved 537,000 shares worth Ksh109 million.

In the Banking sector, shares worth Ksh120 million were transacted and accounted for 3.07% of the
day’s traded value.

Barclays Bank actively moved 5 million shares valued at Ksh59 million while KCB Group gained 2.01% to Ksh43.05 with shares worth Ksh35.8 million.

Equity Group Holdings climbed by 1.61% to Ksh41.10 with shares worth Ksh15 million realized.

The Commercial & Services sector had shares worth Ksh1.5 million traded and accounted for 0.04% of the
day’s traded value.

Nation Media Group was unchanged at Ksh59.75, moving 22,000 shares valued at Ksh1.3 million.

The Insurance sector had shares worth Ksh3.9 million traded and accounted for 0.10% of the day’s traded value.

Britam Holdings declined by 3.06% to Ksh9.50, down from Ksh9.80 registered the previous session. Britam’s shares were worth Ksh3.5 million at the closing bell.

The Investment sector had shares worth Ksh7.65 million traded and accounted for 0.19% of the day’s traded value.

Centum moved 234,000 shares worth Ksh7.4 million and closed at Ksh32.

At the Fixed Income Securities Market Segment (FISMS), the Bond had bonds worth Ksh2.57 billion transacted, increasing from yesterday.
