NSE sheds 5.4 million shares on day British PM Theresa May visits

Some 7.2 million shares valued at Ksh323 million were traded in 1,035 deals, down from 12.6 million shares that were valued at Ksh399 million posted yesterday.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) trading report on August 30 also saw all indices drop while British Prime Minister Theresa May was in the country.

The NSE 20 Share Index was down 3.62 points to stand at 3245.16 while the All Share Index (NASI) shed 0.82 points to stand 172.29. The NSE 25 Share slumped 22.04 points to stand at 4363.11.

The Bond market however had bonds worth Ksh2.5 billion transacted, a 19% increase on yesterday’s transaction.

Bamburi Cement, which announced a 78% decline in half year profit on the same day wrapped up trading at a share price of Ksh183, a Ksh 1 improvement from yesterday’s trading.

Meanwhile, Sanlam Kenya Plc saw trading fall by Ksh2 to settle at Ksh22 after recording a half year loss of Ksh1.5 billion the day prior.

Sectors Wrap

The Banking Sector traded shares worth Ksh74.8 million and accounted for 23.12% of the day’s traded value.

Barclays Bank was the main feature in the sector with 2.1 million shares valued at
Ksh24.1 million changing hands at between Ksh11.50 and Ksh11.65. KCB Group moved 491,000 shares worth Ksh22.9 million and closed at Ksh47.00.

In the Energy & Petroleum Sector, shares worth Ksh2 million transacted and represented 0.63% of the day’s traded value. Kenya Power was up 0.88% to Ksh5.70 and moved 134,000 shares valued at Ksh771,000. KenGen moved 106,000 shares worth Ksh703,000 and closed at Ksh6.60.

The Insurance Sector had shares worth Ksh4.7 million transacted and represented 1.46% of the day’s traded value. Jubilee Holdings unchanged at Ksh490 had 7,100 valued at Ksh3.4 million transacted. CIC Insurance down five cents to Ksh4.45 moved 101,000 shares valued at Ksh453,000.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh155 million transacted and
represented 48.12% of the day’s traded value. British American Tobacco down one shilling to Ksh609 moved 252,000 shares valued at 153.7 million. E.A Breweries closed 2.0% higher to Ksh199 moving shares worth Ksh1.4 million.

In the Telecommunication Sector, Safaricom moved 2.7 million shares valued at Ksh80.8 million at between Ksh29.50 and Ksh30. This represented 24.99% of the day’s traded value.
