Okapi East Africa Ltd has entered into a partnership with Tisuka Federation, based in Kitui County, that will see over 200 women groups receive water tanks.
Formed in 2013, Tisuka Federation‘s main role is to build strong people’s institution (women groups), ensure the need based services reach the community and works toward peace, security and justice among the community. Its services target and benefit over 3,500 members who are mostly women and children.
The table banking initiative started with a weekly saving of Ksh 10 and has since created a capital base of more than Ksh18 million. Patrick Kihara, Okapi East Africa Country Manager, notes that through this partnership, the groups will now be able to sell water to their respective villages across the county.
“Kitui County is faced by water challenges regularly. We have partnered in order to address this challenge to residents of the County and also ensure that the members of the Federation have an extra source of income,” says Kihara.
The company targets to reach 145 million subscribers in Africa in 10 years.
A total of 10 tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres each have been loaned to the Federation for the first phase. The loans will be repaid through the Okapi Finance platform.
Since its launch in 2017, Okapi East Africa has grown to over 100,000 subscribers across the Kenya. Headquartered in Sweden, Okapi Finance International’s mission is to bank the unbanked by providing financial inclusion, increasing access to financial services and minimising transaction charges. The company targets to reach 145 million subscribers in Africa in 10 years.
With Okapi, Kenyans can send and receive up to Ksh 20,000 per transaction, five times a day free through the SWAP service – that allows one to send money to other Okapi customers.
