Stocks end year on high note as investors make a cool Ksh380 billion

The Nairobi Securities Exchange closed the year 2014 on an upward trend, with the benchmark NSE 20 Share Index gaining a total of 21.04 points to settle at 5, 112.65 whereas the broader All Share Index (NASI) shed 0.36 points to close the year at 162.89.

Turnover rose to Ksh1.2 billion on a volume of 38M shares, up from Ksh1.1 billion on 33M shares posted on December 30th. Overall market performance in the year 2014 as measured by the benchmark NSE 20 Share Index rose by 3.77% to close at 5112.65 points up from a low of 4926.97 points posted at the at close of year 2013.

Equity turnover rose by 38.51% to Kes.215 billion from Ksh155 billion posted in 2013. Annual trading volumes surged to 8.1BN shares or +6.10%, up from 7.6 billion shares posted the previous year.

The Bonds market closed the year having climbed 9.09% to Ksh494 billion against Ksh453 billion posted the same comparable period.

Market capitalisation stood at Ksh2.3 trillion against Ksh1.92 trillion posted at close of year 2013, meaning investor made a cool Ksh380 billion during the year.

Agricultural Sector: Plantations accounted for 0.24% of this year’s traded volume. Sasini touched a high of Ksh19.95 and a low of Ksh11.50 on a volume of 15M shares.

Banking Sector had 1.8BN shares traded which 23.27% of this year’s traded volume. Equity Bank touched a high of Ksh63.00 and low of Ksh29.50 on a volume of 654M shares. KCB up 20.63% to Ksh57.00 moved 602M shares. Barclays Bank moved 171M shares and closed year 2014 at Kes.16.70.

Commercial and Services Sector Commercial & Services Sector moved 326M shares, which accounted for 4.01% of this year’s traded volume. Express Kenya was the biggest gainer in this sector, up 58.97% to close at Ksh6.20 on a volume of 3.4M shares. Uchumi Supermarkets moved 114M shares and closed the year at Ksh10.05.

Energy & Petroleum Sector Energy & Petroleum Sector moved 100M shares, which accounted for 1.24% of this year’s traded volume. KenolKobil actively moved 395M shares during the year and closed at a reduced price of Ksh8.70.

Insurance Sector had 617M shares traded and represented 0.08% of this year’s traded volume. British-American Investments up 96.37% to Ksh29.75 moved 205M shares.

Manufacturing & Allied Sector moved 600M shares, which represented 7.39% of this year’s traded volume. Kenya Orchards up an impressive 3,566% to Kes.110.00 moved 48,000 shares. EA Breweries moved 91M shares and closed year 2014 at Ksh308.00.

Telecommunication & Technology Telecommunication & Technology had 3.4BN shares traded and represented 42.45% of this year’s traded volume. Safaricom was this year’s biggest mover, with 3.4bn shares changing hands at between Ksh10.60 and Ksh15.15.

In Growth Enterprise Market Segment (GEMS), Home Afrika moved 156M shares and closed year 2014 at Ksh4.10.
