One dead as rescue efforts stepped up

UPDATE 2

One person has been confirmed dead while an unknown number of of people are still trapped in the five-storey building that collapsed this morning in Makongeni estate along Jogoo Road in Nairobi. Rescue efforts have intensified with a joint rescue efforts from the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre, the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Nairobi City Fire Brigade and the National Youth Service under way.

Information reaching us show that so far eight people were pulled out of the debris alive, but one of them died on the way to Kenyatta National Hospital. Six people were treated and discharged while one is still admitted to the hospital.

The Nairobi County Government is looking for the owner who allowed people to occupy the building without an occupation certificate, according to Nairobi deputy governor Jonathan Mueke.

Nairobi County development control officials are yet to confirm whether the building was approved or not. The building is reported to have collapsed at around 3am and the caretaker has gone missing. Most of the tenants are said to be students at the Technical University of Kenya.
