Standard One laptops programme gets Ksh17bn

The Government has allocated Ksh17.6 billion in the next financial year to finance technology integration in primary schools.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, who presented the 2015-2016 financial statement in the National Assembly yesterday, said the Government was determined to ensure the project, better known as the Standard One laptop programme, takes off.

The Government also gave an indication that the ICT programme will be expanded to include other classes as part of the money will be used to build computer laboratories. “This will also ensure construction of computer laboratories for Standard Four to Eight across all schools,” said Mr Rotich.

In the financial statement, the government also increased funds for free education as well as set aside Sh2.3 billion for recruitment of 5,000 teachers. Teachers Service Commission (TSC), MPs and the unions had requested twice the number is hired to reduce the pupil-teacher ratio.
