The St Joseph’s Boys National School Kitale football team won the Trans Nzoia County soccer title yesterday after defeating the St Anthony’s High School side by a score of 2-0.
The results led to delirious celebrations at Kipkeipkei Boys High School in Cherangany, where the final match was held, as St Joseph’s Boys fans poured onto the field shortly after Elkin Simiyu scored the winning goal that sent the rivals off the rails in the 78th minute — after 16 long years, a little impatience was understandable.
Before halftime, the mood was already considerably darker for St Anthony’s High School players, coaches and fans, who traded angry words in the stands as their team was one goal down, scored by the opponent’s striker Simiyu Wekesa in the 35th minute.
During the second half, the players seemed intent on exacting revenge for their ruined title hopes but to no avail, as the match ended 2 to nil, ending their two-decade dominance in Trans Nzoia County school games.
When the referee blew the final whistle to end the match, St Joseph’s coach Cosmas Nabungolo and his team, with vigour and relish, sang of glory present, the glory of the moment they had all awaited.
His side, together with Wiyeta Girls that beat St Joseph’s Girls 1-0, will be proceeding to regional games scheduled for Bomet starting on July 16.
