Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has reaffirmed that the United Opposition will field a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the next general election, dismissing suggestions of deep internal fractures within the coalition.
Speaking at a public rally in Gatanga constituency, Murang’a County, on Wednesday, Gachagua accused unnamed individuals within the opposition of collaborating with government elements to sow seeds of discord and portray an image of disarray.
“The opposition remains united,” he said, emphasising that the alliance had agreed on a transparent internal nomination process to select one flagbearer.
All aspirants, he added, had committed in principle to rally behind whoever secures the ticket.
“Whichever candidate emerges victorious will be supported by all others,” Gachagua told supporters. He went further, stating he was personally prepared to step aside if another contender was chosen.
The former deputy president urged opposition supporters to disregard narratives of infighting, describing them as deliberate attempts to weaken what he called the “alternative government”.
Gachagua’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation about cohesion within the opposition alliance as it prepares to mount a serious challenge to Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 vote.
Economic discontent, high public debt, and persistent allegations of corruption have fueled opposition momentum in recent months, even as the government touts infrastructure gains, fake economic data and fiscal reforms as part of its big wins.
Turning to the forthcoming Ol Kalou by-election, Gachagua warned residents, particularly young voters, against selling their identity cards, accusing the ruling party of seeking to manipulate the electoral roll.
He assured supporters that the party nominations scheduled for Saturday would be free and fair.
The DCP leader was joined by several senior opposition figures, including Senator Joe Nyutu, Kigumo MP Munyoro, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu and other regional leaders.
