Kenyan athletes led by team captain Ezekiel Kemboi were this morning treated to a grand reception after they landed at the JKIA this morning. Deputy President William Ruto led the reception, backed by Nairobi senator Mike Sonko among many other national leaders.

The Nairobi County Senator provided a fleet of close to 20 cars, most of which were limousines, Mercedes benze and state of the art Range Rovers. The fleet, part of the Sonko Rescue team, brought the international arrival terminal at JKIA to a standstill.

The athletes were entertained by local artistes and were received by their family member and relatives. Julius Yego, current world Javelin champion, was received by his wife and their four month-old son. Mr Ruto congratulated team Kenya for the exemplary performance. “We congratulate you for making Kenya proud. Magical Kenya feels well-represented and welcome home champions,” he said.

Leo nimefurahi kupata nafasi kuona magari makubwa kama haya (We thank Kenyans for the warm welcome. I am happy to see all these executive limousines at our reception),” he said.

Kenya won a total of 16 medals, 7 gold 6 silver and 3 bronze. It has earlier emerged that Kenya were the overall world champions in the just concluded 15th World Athletics Championship Beijing but later dropped second according to the latest IAAF report.

Mike Sonko and Ezekiel Kemboi led the fleet waving the Kenyan flag on the sunroof of their car into Mombasa Road. The Champions are expected to have a joint breakfast with Deputy President William Ruto.
