What next for Terryanne Chebet?

Terryanne  Chebet has worked with most of the TV stations in Kenya. She is the iron lady of the TV industry having had her fair share of moves and startups before rejoining Citizen TV where she appeared to have finally settled.  But as fate would have it, she was among those who received retrenchment letters yesterday, throwing her to the streets to find a new job.

Chebet still has yet to reach her sell-by-date and could easily land another anchoring job at the many TV stations in Kenya or she could take advantage and focus on running her beauty products company she unveiled in June and the PR and branding agency.

Chebet is good at what she does – news anchoring and conducting interviews – perhaps why she has been a target for poaching by many TV stations. Cool and unassuming, Chebet, now in her thirties, started out as an actress before becoming a news anchor at Kenya’s national broadcaster KBC, and later a reporter and producer at CNBC Africa, before joining Citizen TV.

She joined Citizen TV in January 2014 as a Senior Anchor and Associate Business News Editor at Citizen TV and hosted thee Business Centre on Wednesdays at 9pm.

Entrepreneurial mind

In May 2014, she founded Keyara Organics, a natural skincare company. In August 2012, started Scarlet Digital, a company specializing in Digital ( Web Development, SEO, Blogging ) & Social Media, Marketing Communications, Content Creation, Public Relations and Brand Strategy.

Between November 2011 and February 2013, Terryanne Chebet was a Business News Anchor at CCTV News International in Nairobi. She was a TV host of ‘Bizz Africa, CCTV’s flagship business program filmed in Nairobi, with live markets crossings to Johannesburg, Washington and London.

She joined CCTV from Citizen TV where she had worked from August 2010 to February 2012 as Associate editor and Business News Anchor. From March 2007 – August 2010 she was a reporter and also a Producer at CNBC Africa.

In 2009-2010 she was the Head of Sponsorship Committee of the Kenya Women in Film & TV with the task of proposing funding models and opportunities.

From September 2006 – March 2007, she was a Client Service Executive at Express Advertising. From September 2002 –February 2007, she was a News Anchor, TV Producer & Director at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, where she hosted news as well as produced and directed various TV shows such as Kids Unlimited and Code 254. From 2002 – 2004, she was an actress at Phoenix Players.

Off the TV screen, Chebet is an entrepreneur running two companies. In 2012 she founded Scarlet Digital, PR and digital branding agency. And two years ago she started her own line of natural skin and hair care products under Keyara Organics.

“In Africa we know a lot of foreign beauty brands. But we don’t have one African brand that has recognition across the continent,” she said in a past interview after launching the beauty line. “We have a few locally made products but they have stayed within their borders. I recognise that it is not easy to break across geographical barriers but we will try.”
